Unconscious Fear
Eyes first unbolting to the ear’s notification
A bell ringing of terror
Moments of confusion and fear
Leaking sweat down the creases of skin
Aching throat struggling to take in air
Not a bell in sight, nor demons; just fear
Collided thoughts etched in light lead
Glossed over with a blurry glaze
Disorientation by a fabrication of fear
The aroma of loneliness dancing across nose hairs
Still trying to catch the fleeing breath
Unable to figure out what’s real and what’s fear
Safety established as senses regain consciousness
Seeming needlessly panicked; realizing:
It’s only myself of which I fear
About the Poem:
Written to capture the first few moments after waking up from a nightmare.
